The USA in five minutes !
Brian Defrees, 25, who describes himself as a 'media-specialist', decided he wanted to keep a record of his 12,225 mile trip around the country.
Mounting a camera on his car, he set it to take a picture every five seconds. The result was a mesmerising time-lapse video that has turned into a viral hit with nearly half a million views on YouTube.
The five minute film consists of over 200,000 individual photographs and charts his entire journey which started with a drive from New York to Washington D.C.
From Washington he continued south to Florida. He then travelled west across the Deep South, through Texas and past the Grand Canyon towards Los Angeles.
In the second half of his epic road trip Mr DeFrees drove north to Seattle before turning east to return to New York.
In total, he crossed at least 32 states in 55 days.

Een belgische filmvedette in Nederland overleden !
Ursus werd in januari 1987 geboren in een Belgisch dierenpark. Als jong beertje was hij in 1988 te zien in de bioscoopfilm "L'ours" (The bear) van Jean-Jacques Annaud. Hij kwam in januari 1994 met vier andere beren naar Emmen.
Afgelopen week is Ursus veel buiten gebleven. Hij weigerde naar zijn nachtverblijf te gaan, aldus het dierenpark. Buiten lag hij veel te slapen, maar dat is voor een beer in deze tijd van het jaar gewoon. Onderzoek moet uitwijzen wat de doodsoorzaak is geweest. (belga/gb)

Eddy Merckx, Commandeur de la Legion d'Honneur !
Eddy Merckx was awarded the Legion of Honour grade "Commandeur de la Legion d'honneur" today by French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the presidential Elysee palace in Paris.
"It’s a considerable honor," said Merckx, who was initially made Chevalier at the start of the 1975 Tour de France.
The Legion of Honour, or in full the National Order of the Legion of Honour (French: Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur) is a French order established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. The Order is the highest decoration in France. There are five levels: grand croix (grand cross), grand officier (grand officer), commandeur (commander), officier (officer) and chevalier (knight).
Merckx won the Tour de France five times, the Giro d'Italia five times, the Vuelta a España once, won all the monuments* of cycling at least twice, with 19 monument victories in all, won the world championship once as an amateur and three times as a professional, and broke the world hour record.

Spreeuwen in ballet - "Murmuration" in de Engelse taal.

Giro News from Denmark.
What has been previously reported: The Giro will start on Saturday, May 5, with an individual time trial starting and finishing in Herning. Stage 2 will also start and end in the city, after a road stage through Jutland. Stage 3 will start and end in Horsen. That same day, Monday, May 7,the Giro peloton will transfer to Italy.
The official song of the Giro d'Italia, sung by Danish jazz singer Malene Mortensen, will also be unveiled. Here is Mortensen singing "Another Day".

It was another hot and humid day in London when the 1948 marathon was held. This time the route ended with a lap of Wembley Stadium, but the denouement was eerily similar. In a tight race, the 25-year-old Belgian Etienne Gailly was battling with Delfo Cabrera of Argentina and Tom Richards of Wales as they entered the last mile. Gailly suddenly found a burst of energy and tore ahead. With half a mile to the stadium, he led Cabrera by 50 yards and Richards by 100. But the wheels were about to clank off.
In the packed stadium, supporters waited anxiously for the runners to arrive. "And then it happened," began the Manchester Guardian. "A gaunt, tousled and much bespattered figure, wearing the faded red vest of Belgium, tottered up the slope on to the track and paused blinking like a prisoner released from some underground dungeon. It was Gailly. But alas, the slope up the Olympic Way and that last small cruel rise in the tunnel had brought him to his knees and he turned slowly, oh so slowly, to his right for the last 440 metres of track that lay between him and victory. And this time no man ran to help him as 40 years ago they had done to the undoing of Dorando, though it was distressing to watch him in his agony.
"Just as Gailly began to move forward a second figure appeared – Cabrera, going very slowly, but actually running with short steady strides and concentrating deeply on his task. Gailly was undone. He probably did not know that Cabrera passed him at once amid tremendous applause. Before they had completed the lap a shout that split the heavens announced the arrival of Richards, still comparatively fresh and spurting hard. Again Gailly could offer no resistance and Richards came home second."
It was at this point that Gailly, all elbows and knees, waddling around the track like a cloth puppet, stopped moving altogether. But then, unlike Dorando, he received beneficial help from an official. With Gailly staring at him blankly, the official shooed him onwards. Gailly snapped out of his trance and stumbled on, painfully, eventually crossing the line to claim bronze, much to the crowd's delight. He was in hospital when the medal ceremony took place, but at least he had a prize for his efforts, which were none too bad for a marathon debutant, although his travails often obscure the fact that gold medallist Cabrera, too, was running his first 26-mile race.

L'EROICA
Alle zich zelf respecterende wielertoeristen kennen in Frankrijk de "Marmotte" en "Parijs-Roubaix" en bij ons "Luik-Bastenaken-Luik" en "De Ronde". Italië heeft naast "La Primavera" ook iets speciaal in het prachtige Toscane nl zijn "L'Eroica". Deze wedstrijd van +/- 200 km wordt verreden over onverharde landelijke en golvende wegen en om het echt origineel te maken met "retro" fietsen...dus hoe ouder hoe leuker en authentieker.

2010 versus 1910 !
De volgende documentaire film hoeft geen betoog, heeft een schitterende uitdaging, is prachtig in beeld gebracht en heeft een verrassende ontknoping. Goed getrainde kerels in het bezit van extra lichte fietsen en daarbij voorzien van alle andere moderne snufjes en toch...waren de kerels van 1910 nog een stuk sneller. Echte mannen en niet alleen op hun zware fiets maar ook in hun taalgebruik. Octave Lapize, de eindwinnaar van deze eerste memorabele bergrit (in de sprint) verklaarde de organisatoren dan ook tot " vous étes des assassins".

The Adventures of Philip Marlowe
Philips Marlowe, de "private investigater" in de boeken van Raymond Chandler, is de held in het volgend luisterspel, oorspronkelijk uitgebracht door NBC radio in 1947 maar afgevoerd na 4 sessies. Herwerkt en terug in de ether gebracht door CBS in 1948 waar de serie een kleine 2 jaar liep (105 afleveringen). Een prima prestatie in het tijdperk waar de radio het eerste en enige communicatiemiddel was en waar TV even zeldzaam was als een klavertje vier. Hierbij deel l:

Wat een verschil met het vooraanzicht van een spurtend peloton, alles renners liggen netjes van elkaar gescheiden. Vergelijk dit eens met foto twee. Een wereld van verschil.

Fiets voor de toekomst !
Door het duurder worden van de huidig gebruikte materialen, nl. ijzer, alu, koolstof ...ed is dit een mogelijke oplossing in de nabije toekomst. De bamboe racefiets. Supersterk, een eco product, een hebbeding (!) en meer dan waarschijnlijk een stuk goedkoper dan zijn hedendaagse broeders.

Onwaarschijnlijke prestatie in 1947 !
Op de laatste dag van 2010 overleed Raymond Impanis. De oudere generatie zal zich Impanis wellicht herinneren als de commentator in de Rodonia wagen bij elke wielerwedstrijd van enig belang. Op zijn erelijst vindt u Parijs- Roubaix, de Ronde van Vlaanderen en andere belangrijke wedstrijden...maar de belangrijkste, althans naar mij gevoel,is winst in de langste tijdrit uit de Tour ooit. Impanis won deze rit verreden over een afstand van 139 km met een voorsprong van 4'54'' op Jean Robic (de later Tour laureaat)aan een gemiddelde snelheid van 36,324 km/uur op een heuvelachtig parcours tussen Vannes en St-Brieuc. Fenomenaal!
